Both stylish and practical against the cold, knitwear remains a must-have item for every man’s wardrobe. Men’s knitwear can be versatile, and there is a range of different choices for a variety of situations, as outlined below.
Roll-neck – Ideal for the slimmer figure, roll-necks can be worn as a casual addition to chinos and boots or teamed with a suit for something a little smarter.
Crew-neck – Crew-neck sweaters are extremely versatile and can work with almost any style of outfit. It’s the better choice for those with a larger frame, as they tend to be worn less close-fitting than other styles of men’s knitwear.
Although there is always debate as to whether a shirt should be worn underneath crew-neck sweaters, both can look equally flattering depending on the garment. Certainly, chunkier knits benefit from the contrast of a shirt. However, lighter versions can easily be worn with nothing underneath.
V-neck –The V-neck can be worn by anyone, regardless of body type. This style is mid-range in terms of fit – typically they are worn as a closer fit than the crew neck, but looser than the roll-neck.
The V-neck offers a more casual look and as such is a great choice for relaxed weekends or dress-down days at the office. As a general rule, V-necks should not reveal more than a couple of shirt buttons. It is possible to buy thicker-knit V-neck sweaters, or for a minimalist and streamlined look, you can select a fine-knit version.
Cardigan – Layering is particularly fashionable at the moment, and the cardigan is the perfect garment to help achieve this look. Cardigans work best for those with an athletic body shape, accentuating the broader shoulders. For a rugged, quite masculine appearance, chunkier knits can be paired with boots and jeans. For those looking to achieve a slightly more refined style, layer finer yarns in place of a tank top as part of a suit ensemble.
Slipover Vest – The knitted sleeveless top can really soften a suited look. A versatile garment, which can be worn throughout the autumn, winter and spring months, the slipover vest enables the wearer to add a little colour to an outfit. This is especially good for more casual settings.
Style tips:
- Why not wear a wool jumper under a blazer? The layered look works when you are in and out of the office and dealing with fluctuating temperatures. For something a little different, consider a patterned knitted jumper. Great for a weekend or even under a casual jacket. The general rule for pattern is: the finer the print, the finer the knit and vice versa.
- Think about the neckline, and choose a shape most flattering for you.
- If you are wearing men’s wool jumpers inside, it is almost certainly coat-wearing weather outside. Take care with your coat and jumper combination, as this can be all too easy to get wrong. If the sweater is too bulky under a coat or jacket, it can look uncomfortable. On the flip side, too thin a jumper and the layered look won’t work either. Choose something medium-weight in a colour or colours that contrast with that of your coat. For more information on layering check out our journal post ‘The Art of Layering Menswear’.
- For the changing season, choose a cashmere wool jumper for warmth and versatility. There are light but beautifully warm. Opt for a crew, V-neck or half-zip neckline for a range of different looks.
- As well as offering warmth and comfort, men’s wool jumpers can help the wearer achieve a softer, more homely appearance- a nice change from being suited and booted all week while in the office.
