Formal Shirts: How to Match Your Tie to Your Shirt
The art of matching your tie to your shirt can be a confusing business. It may seem like a simple task, but it can sometimes prove tricky. In our autumn/winter collection we have a wide range of men’s formal shirts varying from butcher stripes to Tattersall checks as well as a great selection of silk ties which have been chosen to complement each of our formal shirts perfectly.
There are a few factors you should consider when it comes to picking the perfect shirt and tie combination. Here are a few tips to help you:
- Match your tie to your shirt not the other way around. Don’t buy a tie just because it looks good.
- Make sure the tie you buy is of a colour and pattern that works well with the formal shirts you already have. A fail safe rule is to choose a tie that it is darker than your shirt.
- Keep it simple and you’ll never go wrong. Simplicity is never outdated. Pair a plain shirt with a tie in a darker shade or add a simple pattern for a well turned out look.
- Try to vary the pattern size on your shirt and tie as otherwise it can cause an optical illusion effect that is very unpleasant to the eye. As a rule of thumb you should wear a smaller check on your shirt and a larger check on your tie.
- If in doubt, pick a solid, neutral coloured formal shirt such as cream, pale blue or pink. A white shirt is the most versatile as it can be paired with almost any tie.
- If you opt for a patterned tie ensure the pattern contains a colour that complements the shirt.
